Summer 2012: Irish jam sessions and other musical events
Spring is almost here in Finland. It is now quite difficult to decide between the macintosh raincoat, rubber boots and padded winter coat. Summer will make it through I am sure, but just in case, don't sue me if it late...
Nevertheless, I'd like to remind you that Irish jam sessions go on like every year in Helsinki. That means that:
- O'Malley's won't have session at all during May-June-July and probably the first week of August.
- Molly Malone's will hold sessions every Sunday 17:00 and the whole summer through. Even on
snowy days. Ahem...
Furthermore:
- Black Door monthly (first thursday of each month) Open stage Jam sessions will take a break during
summer and likely start back at the beginning of August.
- The following Folk Club night will be exceptionally held Thursday June 14th.
All planned events can be viewed from the Celtic Center .EU calendar.

Irlantilaisessa ja muussakin kelttiläisessä musiikissa on jotain samaa kuin suomalaisessa musiikissa - etenkin kansanmusiikissa. Toisaalta on surullisia balladeja, mutta toisaalta on myös iloista ja nopeaa pääosin instrumentaalimusiikkia.
Sanoitukset ovat myös kovin samanlaisia; ne käsittelevät rakkautta, juomista, tappeluita, pettämistä ja muita tavallisen ihmisen elämänasioita. Pääosassa on kuitenkin rakkauteen tavalla tai toisella kuuluvat aiheet. Suomalainen kansanmusiikki on ollut jo pitkään poissa valtavirrasta ja sitä ei juurikaan enää kuule kuin vain tietyissä paikoissa ja tapahtumissa. Onneksi irlantilaista musiikkia on mahdollista kuulla ja soittaa säännöllisesti ainakin pääkaupunkiseudulla.
Irlantilainen musiikki tuntuu olevan sellaista, josta melkein kaikki pitävät ainakin Euroopassa ja ns. länsimaissa riippumatta kulttuuritaustasta. Minusta tuolle on yksi ja selkeä syy: irlantilainen ja yleensäkin kelttiläinen musiikki on sellaista, mikä saa hyvälle tuulelle. Nopea kelttiläinen musiikki saa iloiseksi ja jalka alkaa vipattamaan musiikin menevän rytmin tahtiin. Toisaalta hidas kelttimusiikki koskettaa syvältä ja nostaa esiin tunneskaalan laidasta laitaan. Kuitenkin päällimmäisenä siinäkin on hyvät tunteet kuten rakkaus, kaipuu, yhteys toiseen ihmiseen jne.
Parhain irlantilainen musiikki sopii tilanteeseen kuin tilanteeseen. Se saa sekä kuuntelijat että soittajat hyvälle tuulelle ja energisoi sopivasti. Vaikka kylmän talven pimeys painaisi päälle ja jatkuva pimeys uuvuttaisi, irlantilainen musiikki tuo energiaa niin, että väsymys unohtuu ja kaikki alkaa näyttää taas paremmalta. Sitten jaksaa taas jatkaa. Irlantilainen musiikki on kuin vitamiiniruiske, joka laittaa päiviin vauhtia ja saa taas puhtia tekemiseen.
In Irish and all other celtic music there's something same than in Finnish music - at least in Finnish traditional music. On the other hand there is beautiful, sometimes sad, ballads, but on the other hand there is happy, quick, mainly instrumental music.
The lyrics are also quite the same by their topic; they speak of love, drinking, fights, cheating and other events in a human's life. The most part of those songs handle love, someway or another. Finnish folk music has been quite a long time out of the main stream music and there's only a few occasions when it can be heard, mainly in special events and musical festivals. It's good that irish music can be heard and played regularly - at least in the capital, Helsinki, and surrounding areas.
Irish music seems to be liked by almost everybody, at least in Europe and western countries no matter which cultural background is influencing people's likes. I think there is only one and clear reason: Irish and celtic music in general is such that it gets you on good mood. Fast celtic music makes you happy and your foot starts to move by the rhythm of the music. On the other hand the slow celtic music touches very deeply and emotionally, bringing up the emotional scale from other end to the other. But still there's good emotions dominating; like love, longing, connection to other people etc.
The best Irish music is good in any situation. It makes both the listeners and the players happy and brings lots of energy. Even though the darkness of the cold winter puts a pressure on us and the continuous darkness makes us tired, Irish music brings energy and counteracts that all, so that people forget the tiredness and everything starts to look much brighter. Then you have the strength to go on in the dark cold winter. Irish music is like a burst of vitamins, that makes the days buzz and gives a boost on any activity.
